Final Summative Poster Written Response

Throughout the year, this course has taught me many valuable skills. We have used Photoshop, Final Cut Express, and iMovie. I learned many new concepts relating to these programs and also new technical techniques that were to be used in the final summative. The poster I chose best represented my PSA is pictured above. I used a monochromatic colour scheme from the colour scheme designer website shown in class. I decided to use the colour blue in my poster because it showed how recycling can save the world and lead to cleaner and less polluted air. The text “Recycle” was essentially made by cutting out letters from plastic bottles in a landfill. I feel that this poster best represented my skills in Photoshop because I made use of the rule of thirds. This rule allows the viewer’s eyes to flow better through the poster. The viewer’s eyes will immediately be drawn to either the large text near the top of the picture plane, or the large EAC logo. Proximity was also used in that the texts both above and below the logo are almost together and can be read together. I placed “Recycling” larger and hitting two intersections if a grid of 9 is put on the poster. Also, the logo and the plastic water bottle both hit an intersection which draws the viewer’s eyes and allow better flow through the poster. Another reason this was my favorite poster was that I put the plastic bottle spewing out smoke similar to a polluting smoke stack. This analogy shows that recycling bottles make cleaner air and help make a greener and less polluted world. My other poster demonstrated the use of symmetry rather than the rule of thirds. I chose to write about this poster because I felt it was the best out of the two and contributed to the overall point of the PSA and topic.

Lastly, I applied the many Photoshop skills discussed during the year, which helped me succeed in creating this poster. Overall, thanks to the multiple useful design elements, I was able to create a final poster demonstrating how I have developed as a media arts student.

Bentley Poster Design

I feel that this poster was my best creation because it represents the Bentley the best. The Bentley Supersports Continental is a luxury car all about Power and Versatility. I included the 2 main themes of the car along the street in the background. Near the top of the poster, a description of the car's design is featured in old looking font due to the location. The poster is in a European town that is particularly old looking and therefore the font relates to the background location. The city street was changed to make the viewer focus on the Bentley because at the end of the day, the car is the main focus on the poster. It stands out and I feel that I achieved my goal to make the focus, the car. The colours make the poster work well together and a successful car poster. The rule of thirds was also implemented in the poster so that the main objects and focuses in the poster are in the viewer's natural line of sight. If a grid of 9 squares is imagined, the Bentley is placed at the intersection of 2 lines away from the center of the poster. The center is rather empty with only the photo's vanishing point and sky in view. The rule of thirds aided successfully in leading the viewer's eyes to the most important part of the poster. The reason I didn't choose my other car posters was because I felt they weren't the best poster at making the car the main focus. Although they might be more visually good looking, this poster includes all the right aspects to make a successful car poster.

Flying Squirrel FTW

This is an example of a picture using the elliptical marquee tool. Go to your browser and find a picture that you want to use. Next, drag the photo into Photoshop and press  + 0 (command)to resize the image. Click on the elliptical marquee tool that is the second tool on the dropdown menu. Create an elliptical around the part of the image you want to see. Go to the select tab and press inverse. This will reverse the direction of the highlighted area so that you can change the colour of the outside part of the image. To change the colour, press “Set background Colour’” which is the last 2 boxes with colours. Change the bottom box to the colour you want and press delete. To make the cutout feathered, choose the elliptical marquee tool and make another circle inside the previous one you made. Go to Refine Edge in the option menu and change the feathering to your personal choice. Press Delete when you are done to finalize the image. There you have it!

This picture uses the magnetic lasso tool. It is very simple and easy to create. First I took a picture of my face on Photo booth using the Mac webcam. Insert the image from Photo booth into Photoshop. Using the lasso tool, draw around your face and then drag in into the picture of Spiderman. Move the face so that it matches the original face of Spiderman. That is how you make this photo.

Land of Cartoons

This picture makes use of layers and the magnetic lasso tool. I took a group of images from the web and separately, using the magnetic lasso tool, cropped and dragged them into a backdrop. I used layers because i needed to overlap some images like Garfield and the Lamborghini.

Colour Goats

This is an extra picture created for fun. I used the magnetic lasso tool to select both goats and the Hue/Saturation tool under the Image tab. Once you have selected the goat with the lasso tool, click image/Adjustments/Hue-Saturation and personalize the 3 options (Hue, Saturation, Lightness.
